| ***Tayu is also known as oiran. |
|
A type of high-class prostitute of the Edo period (1600-1868). The word
oiran refers to a certain class of yujo (licenced prostitute)
in the Yoshiwara brothel and entertainment district of Edo (now Tokyo).
Oiran entertained their clients in well-appointed zashiki
(sitting rooms) and often had several attendants to see to their personal
needs. A common sight in Yoshiwara was the oiran dochu, public
procession of oiran clad in their finest kimono and
accompanied by their attendants.
